Science and Technology
The Science & Technology Department of the Government of West Bengal was set up in 1988. The West Bengal State Council of Science & Technology, an autonomous body, registered under the Societies Registration Act & under the administrative control of this Department, was established on an all-India pattern, to facilitate the operationalizing of the Department's mandate, with inputs from eminent experts in diverse specialized scientific and technology-related spheres. It has spread its activities manifold, with the participation of the scientific and academic community. In the span of two decades this Department has traversed a long way in promoting scientific activities in various fields and fostered important research and innovative programmes through reputed Universities, Research Institutes, Colleges and Civil Society. Through Remote Sensing and Geo Information Systems the Department plays a very key role in providing state-of-the-art tools and base documents to assist Government Departments and Agencies in improving their planning and monitoring techniques. Some of the Projects in this sector are undertaken in partnership with the National Remote Sensing Centre and Indian Space Research Organization of the Government of India. It supports Seminars, Workshops and awareness programmes in important areas such as the global warming & climate change, green technologies, water conservation, solid waste management, biodiversity, innovative rural technologies, agricultural developments, intellectual property rights in partnership with various well-established organizations of the State. 

Biotechnology
Establishment of the Department of Biotechnology in 2006-2007 gave a new impetus towards upscalingthe ‘state of the art' and traditional biotechnology in West Bengal with a resolve to endeavor towards socio-economic upliftment of society. The Department aims to actively promote, sustain and importantly, facilitate the development of Biotechnology. As Biotechnology is a knowledge based sector wherein development is critically dependent on ‘Research & Innovation' the department actively supports research and development, nurtures quality human resources and provides infrastructural facilities for development of biotechnology based industries. The Department has made significant achievements in the growth and sustenance of biotechnology in diverse areas of agriculture, health care, animal sciences, environment and academia-industry collaborations. The ASSOCHAM (Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India) has identified West Bengal as a potential business growth centre with biotechnology as a potential area of investment. Considering the lucrative return on the investment as well as the high potential for societal development, the Government of West Bengal aims at furthering biotechnology based activities in the fields of healthcare (including genomics, proteomics, diagnostics, DNA fingerprinting of indigenous medicinal plants etc.), agriculture (including floriculture, sericulture etc.), mapping of Bengal’s Biodiversity and environmental protection.
